Welcome to the ‘Stitch Explorer’ Sampler

This sampler is a slow stitching project for everyone who wants to enjoy learning or just simply stitching lots of different stitches. At this point we have no idea how long it will take to complete, or what it will look like!

Week 2 stitching…

This week I couldn’t resist doing a bit of Square Laid Filling as I love how quickly this fills a space but how beautiful it looks when complete.

We will be stitching the area of the sampler highlighted here…

Square Laid Filling (Trellis) with Diagional Filling over the top

Start by choosing 3 colours that complement one another. In the same shade you could choose a dark, medium or light alternatively, you could choose 3 different colours that look nice with each other.

Here’s what I chose…

Step 1: Stitch a simple Trellis stitch. This is also known as square laid filling as well as a few other terms! Long vertical stitches overlayed with long hoizontal stitches and then a tiny stitch on the cross sections to hold the grid in place…

I used 3 strands for a chunkier effect…

You can find a step by step on the RSN Stitch Bank… Trellis

Step 2: Stitch a second Trellis grid over the top of the first but diagonally. I used 3 strands again.

Step 3: Next, anchor the cross sections down on the diagonal grid with a tiny vertical stitch.

This completes a very simple but very effective square laid filling.

If you take a look at one of my Pinterest boards – I have compiled a few different examples for you to be inspired by…

Thats all I had time to stitch this week as it was abit of a hectic one! I will try to get a few more in for next week if I can!

Make sure you show off your chosen stitches in the Happy Stitching FB Group or on Instagram with #stitchdoodlesembroidery.

If you need help along the way just ask in the FB group as there are lots of lovely people stitching along with you who can offer lots of advice and support if needed.

Happy stitching!
