Welcome to the Poinsettia Flower Sampler Stitch A Long

This beautiful Poinsettia Sampler can be stitched over 15 days as there are 15 posts detailing different stitches. Alternatively you could wizz through and get it done a lot quicker. The flower is created from 16 different stitches!

Look at all these lovely stitches you can stitch…

Poinsettias are well known for being beautiful Christmas blooms, however they do come in all different colours so you can enjoy stitching this sampler in colours to suit the time of year whenever you decide to stitch it.

Materials required…

  • Fabric – 12inch ( a 100% cotton or linen is a great choice)
  • Calico – 12inch – I use this as a stabilizer behind my main fabric when stitching.
  • Embroidery Thread in your chosen colour, as this is a sampler you could experiment with different types of thread.
  • Frixion Pen for transferring the design.
  • Needle and Scissors
  • 6 inch embroidery hoop

You will also need the Pattern Template…

You can get the FREE template from the Stitchdoodles Pattern Resource Library – you can get access to this through the link at the bottom of this post. There is lot’s more fun stuff in there as well.

Before you start…

Download the template from the link below and trace on to your fabric so you are ready to get stitching…

Along with the template, you can also download and print out a diagram which has the petals numbered so you can refer to this as you go along so you are popping the correct stitches in the right petal.

Start stitching, Day 1…

For a gentle start we will be doing the following, very simple outline stitch…

Couching

Refer to the diagram, and start by stitching  Petal 1 and Petal 8 with a couching stitch around the outer edge…

Are you a beginner and need some help…

How to do the Couching Stitch…

Referring to the diagram below…

Come up at 1 with your main thread and leave it there.

Using a separate thread (couching thread) come up at 2 and down at 3 (directly opposite where you came out at 2)  so the couching thread goes over the main thread anchoring it down as in step 4.

Continue in this way, making small stitches across the main thread to anchor it down.

When the line is stitched, take the main thread to the back of your work and secure off.

Couching

Once you have couched around both petals 1 and 8 the first part of the poinsettia embroidery sampler is complete!

Next we will be adding in some Split Stitch and Stem Stitch… you can head to that post here… Day 2 Stitching

You can tag me on Instagram with #stitchdoodlesembroidery, post some pics in the Happy Stitching FB Group or send me your photos to nicola@stitchdoodles.com and I will include them here with your permission.
