Welcome to the ‘Escape to Africa’ Stitch A Long
This Stitch A Long is taking place for 12 weeks on the Stitchdoodles blog – Starting Wednesday 31st May 2023 and finishing on Wednesday 16th August 2023.
Each Wednesday during the SAL – a new tutorial will be published on the blog with all the information you need to complete a part of the Escape to Africa Pattern.
If you are not familiar with a Stitchdoodles SAL and this is all new to you and you would like to join in, please go to this page to get all the information.
Do you need help with any of the stitches?
A Stitch A Long doesn’t provide you with the step by step instructions for the stitches themselves – it is a tutorial on how to stitch the pattern design – colours, techniques and stitches used etc. I will link to a ‘How to’ for certain stitches where I can, if you need further guidance, please take a look here …

Stitching Week 7…
This week is the Rhino block as well as 2 smaller blocks on the top row – the hut and flower.
The Rhino
You will need the following colours… #535, #03, #310, #3866
Use 2 strands unless stated otherwise
To start…
#535: Split stitch the outline of the Rhino.
#535: Split stitch the edge of the ear and then a couple of rows inside the ear leaving a small area in the centre free.

#03: Chain stitch across the top of the rhino just inside the stitched edge. Continue stitching in rows to fill the top of the body and the head. Straight stitch the small inner ear area.

#03: Continue filling the remaining area of the Rhino’s body with chain stitch ensuring the outlines in the darker grey remain visible.

Finishing Details for this block…
#310: Split stitch the eye circle and then with 1 strand of #03 – straight stitch a small pupil in the centre.
#3866: Satin stitch the 2 horns.

Stitching the Triangular Pattern…
The triangles are stitched with straight stitch in 3 colours inside each other.
#632, #976, #725
Now for the 2 smaller blocks this week:
The hut:
#632: Satin Stitch the Base
#3827: Outline the roof edges with back stitch and then fill with long stitch going down to fill and criss crossing over each other occasionally for a more rustic look.

The Pink Flower:
#718: Satin stitch the petals
#3866: Straight stitch the inner area by bringing your thread out into the lower petal edge and down in the centre. Keep going around like this until you are happy with the effect.
