Welcome to the ‘Escape to Africa’ Stitch A Long
This Stitch A Long is taking place for 12 weeks on the Stitchdoodles blog – Starting Wednesday 31st May 2023 and finishing on Wednesday 16th August 2023.
Each Wednesday during the SAL – a new tutorial will be published on the blog with all the information you need to complete a part of the Escape to Africa Pattern.
If you are not familiar with a Stitchdoodles SAL and this is all new to you and you would like to join in, please go to this page to get all the information.
Do you need help with any of the stitches?
A Stitch A Long doesn’t provide you with the step by step instructions for the stitches themselves – it is a tutorial on how to stitch the pattern design – colours, techniques and stitches used etc. I will link to a ‘How to’ for certain stitches where I can, if you need further guidance, please take a look here …
How to Teach Yourself Hand Embroidery Stitches
Stitching Week 4.
The Eagle
For the Eagle, you will need the following colours…
#3866, #632, #535, #725, #310
Use 2 strands throughout unless stated otherwise.

Stitching the Eagle…
The head:
#725: Split stitch the yellow face area.
#3866: Satin Stitch the White Head around the yellow.
Stitching the Wing:
#632: Long and Short stitch the top section.

Next stitch the middle section of feathers…
#632: Back stitch the vertical stripes on the middle section first
#310: Split stitch to fill in between the brown stripes. The brown stripes are there to give a bit of contrast between the feathers – they don’t need to be perfectly visible as long as you can see them coming through.

Stitching the lowest feather section…
#535: Split stitch the vertical feather lines
#310: Split stitch to fill in between the grey stripes as you did for the middle section.

Use the following photo to stitch the finishing details…
- #632: Satin stitch the 2 upper part of the legs separately
- #3866: Satin stitch the 2 tail feathers
- #535: Split stitch the feet and on the foot behind stitch with #3866
- #310: Straight stitch the claws, straight stitch a few small lines over the upper brown section of the wing.
- #310: French knot the eye and straight stitch the beak.
To stitch the 4 diamond shapes, use straight stitch and do 3 layers of colour as follows (outermost first)…
#632, #976, #725
#309: French Knot to centre of each

Stitching the 2 smaller blocks…
The Flower and Leaves

#743: Satin Stitch the Petals.
#309: Straight stitch the lines on the bottom edge of each petal randomly sized to create an uneven star effect.

#976: Split stitch around the leaf edges and up the stem.
#3827: Satin stitch to fill each leaf.
